Precruitment Townsville gets involved with YWAM
This month our Townsville Branch Manager Jan Scott was invited to Breakfast at the YWAM centre on Ingham Road. A large group of business professionals were treated to great entertainment and a delicious breakfast, as well as a confronting awareness of the plight of people in one of our nearest neighbours, Papua New Guinea.
The purpose of the event was to highlight the on going support that the YWAM medical ship, which travels to PNG, requires. The work that is provided by the volunteers is outstanding! So impressed, we wanted to share with you just how amazing the organisation and the team of volunteers are. Saving lives and improving health for the people of PNG, is all part of a day’s work for these volunteers!
The ship, operated by local group YWAM, is staffed by volunteers from all over the world, many from right here in Townsville. The doctors, nurses, chefs, marine professionals and more give 2 1/2 weeks of their time to venture on the vessel to some of Papua New Guinea's most remote places to help those who would otherwise have no option.
Medical Coordinator and local RN, Hannah Peart (pictured) says, "In some areas we visit there are no health workers at all or no medicine or bandages or supplies. It’s quite shocking.”
On the other hand, the PNG people are full of life and joy.
"I love being in the village," Peart says, "All of our volunteers have an amazing time getting to know the people. Its one of those cases, where you gain just as much as you give because the people are so generous with their love and hospitality."
The group has just released 2012 outreach dates which are available at their website www.ywamships.org
Medical and Marine professionals are encouraged to sign up, along with general volunteers who may find themselves handing out eye glasses or working in the galley.
The ship will be returning to Townsville in September where it will undergo routine maintenance. Volunteers can work on board for a day, a week or a month between September 19-October 21. Businesses are encouraged to sign up a team to help out either with skilled labour such as carpentry, or to assist with inventory and cleaning. Again, interest can be registered online at www.ywamships.org
YWAM has indicated that donations of soap, toothpaste and reading glasses would be gratefully received, Precruitment have decided to run a “drive” and encourage you to jump on board.
We are collecting your donations of soap, toothpaste an old reading glasses at our office on Barlow Street up until 18th September 2011.
